Terms of Service

You must be 18 or older to hold an account. You are responsible for the profiles you create and for keeping your sign-in details private. You confirm that you are the parent or guardian of, or otherwise have authority to provide information about, any child you add. Accounts and child profiles may not be transferred to another person.

Story Credits are a one-time purchase, not a subscription. They do not expire. One credit pays for one new generated chapter or new adventure. Reading, re-reading and finishing stories you already own is always free. Credits have no cash value and cannot be transferred between accounts. Prices are shown and charged in New Zealand dollars (NZD). Promotional and voucher credits are not purchased credits and are not redeemable for cash.

Stories and illustrations are produced by AI and are unique to your family. You may read, print and keep them for personal, non-commercial family use. You may not resell them or use the service to infringe another person's rights. We may not be able to reproduce an identical story twice. Our How AI is used page forms part of these terms.

AI-generated content can be inconsistent, inaccurate or imperfect, and a hero drawing is an artistic interpretation rather than a portrait. Stories are imaginative entertainment, not professional, factual, medical, educational or safety advice. A parent or guardian should supervise use and decide whether each story is suitable for their child.

Do not submit content that is unlawful, hateful, sexual, violent or otherwise unsuitable for children. Written ideas are filtered for child safety and unsuitable requests are declined without using a credit. Do not try to bypass safety controls, interfere with the service, access another family's information or use automated means to create accounts or generate content at unreasonable volume.

We aim to keep the service available but cannot guarantee uninterrupted access. If a paid generation cannot be completed, the credit is returned to your balance. We may change, suspend or discontinue a feature where reasonably necessary for safety, security, legal, technical or commercial reasons. We will try to give reasonable notice of a material change where practical.

You can stop using Story Universe at any time. We may suspend accounts that breach these terms. Unused credits are not refundable on closure except under our refund policy or where required by law. To request full account deletion, contact hello@herotales.org from the account email address.

Nothing in these terms limits any right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded, including rights under New Zealand consumer law. Subject to those rights, Story Universe is provided on an "as available" basis. We do not promise that the service will always be uninterrupted, error-free or produce a particular creative result.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Story Universe is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data, loss of opportunity or loss arising from reliance on AI-generated content. Our total liability for claims connected with the service is limited to the amount you paid Story Universe in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. This limit does not apply where liability cannot legally be limited or excluded.

We may update these terms as the service or legal requirements change. The latest version will appear on this page with an updated date. If a change materially affects existing users, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to their attention before or when it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after the change means you accept the updated terms.

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and New Zealand courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction. This does not prevent a consumer from relying on mandatory rights that apply where they live. Questions can be sent to hello@herotales.org.
